About Nice
Nice has it all. Blue sea and beach clubs, art and culture, night life and good food.
Some of our favourite places to visit are:
Near the flat:
Liberation Market - a vast food market selling fresh and local fruit and veg, fish, cheese, olive oil, eggs, jams…open every day except Monday
Gare du Sud - the revamped hall of the old station with a bar, food hall, cinema, restaurants…
Cafe Tin Tin - just beside the market, legendary hole in the wall selling the best pan bagnat (salad nicois in a huge crusty bap) and tarte tatin
Maison Libanais - tasty lebanese restaurant
The old town:
Palais Lascaris - beautiful but tiny 17thc Nicois palace with collection of old musical instruments
Opera House - a stunning building with a rolling programme of accessible music (and an escape room if your french is up to it)
Monday antiques market in the Cours Saleya
Comptoir du Marche - well priced and delicious restaurant.
The rest of Nice:
Promenade du Paillon - ribbon park built on the bed of the Paillon river, running North from the sea front, wonderful fountains and planting. Goes up to the modern art museum MAMAC with interesting artists and great views from the top
Musee Matisse - Matisse lived and worked in Nice and this museum has a selection of his paintings set in a villa above the town near to a stunning Roman amphiteatre
About the cote d’azur
If you’d like to venture out of Nice, the train takes you along the coast, or you can hire a car to head inland.
Some of our favourite trips are:
Villefranche-sur-mer:
7 minutes on the train - pretty medieval village and castle with a safe sandy beach and easy swimming. Good harbourside restaurants. You can walk here from Nice along the coast - about 1-2 hours with some steep bits, but gorgeous.
Beaulieu -sur-mer:
Belle-epoque town, also some nice beaches and the port is the base for the wonderful self hire boat trips from Dark Pelican https://www.darkpelican.com/en/
Entrevaux
Medieval hill village accessible from the ‘train des pignes’ the pine train which used to run on pine cones. The station is just behind the flat, and the train takes you away from the heat and into the hills, with numerous stop off points. Entrevaux has a restaurant and spectacular castle.
